Rates of skin cancer are increasing faster than any other cancer.

Non-melanoma skin cancer & Actinic Keratosis

Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC): Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), largely caused by sun exposure.

Look out for a sore or area of skin that: 

• Doesn’t heal within 4 weeks 
• Looks unusual 
• Hurts, is itchy, bleeds, crusts or scabs for more than 4 weeks  

Actinic Keratosis (AK)

Solar keratosis, AK, is a pre-cancerous skin condition - rough, scaly patches on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, scalp, and hands. While typically harmless, AK lesions can, if left untreated, progress to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of NMSC.

Melanoma skin cancer - Look out for:

• A new abnormal mole 
• A mole that seems to be growing or changing

Asymmetry – non-uniform, with one half of the patch looking different to the other

Border – irregular or undefined border  

Colour – more than one colour 

Diameter – melanoma growths are usually larger than 6mm

Evolution – changing size, shape, texture or colour over time

Prevention is better than a cure

• Wear a broad-brimmed hat that shades the face and neck 
• Wea long sleeves and trousers 
• Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection 
• Seek shade when the sun is strongest (between 11 am and 3 pm) 
• Never use sunbeds  
• Use a high-level (at least SPF30) broad-spectrum sun protection every day, regardless of the weather
