5 Top Tips From Our Dermatologist: - Check that your washing detergent is suitable for sensitive skin
Bio detergents can trigger eczema-prone skin because of the cleaning-agent enzymes in their formulas. Choose a non-bio alternative suitable for sensitive skin instead.
- Limit steroid use
Prescription medications such as steroid creams can calm and treat severe eczema flare-ups. However, prolonged use can cause unwanted effects, thin the skin, and cause skin lightening, so they shouldn't be used long-term. Choose non-steroid creams such as Hydromol instead.
- Choose clothes that keep your skin happy.
Synthetic fabrics such as polyester are man-made materials that cause the body to overheat and sweat, resulting in inflammation. Choose natural fabrics like 100% cotton. Cotton is soft, cool, great at absorbing sweat, easily washable and allows the skin to 'breathe'. Opting for loose
fabrics that move with you rather than tight clothes prevents excessive pressure and friction.
- Consider investing in supplements
Inflammation and a poor skin barrier are key components in the development of eczema, so following an anti-inflammatory diet and focusing on skin health can be extremely beneficial.
Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Omegas+ combines omega-3 from sustainable fish oil and omega-6 from evening primrose oil with the addition of vitamin A to maintain healthy skin cells. - Resist the urge to scratch
Scratching itchy eczema can seem like the only way to get rid of the itch. However, it can break the skin, causing skin infections.
Keep fingernails smooth and short with no obvious rough edges. This will help if you tend to get severe itching throughout the night without realising it. Wear gloves overnight if you have to. If you really can't resist the urge to scratch, pinch the area to relieve the immediate skin irritation.
